Abstract

Research has been carried out about the behaviour of the micro wave when it passed the obstacle to the straight side in Fresnel diffraction. In this research the micro wave evidently crept in the straight direction and omnidirection. This condition, however, was not suitable to be applied in Fresnel diffraction to the obstacle to the straight side. As a result, there was some deviation between the results of the analysis of the data and the theory-based calculation to determine the relative intensity in a certain point by the detector/the micro wave recipient. According to the theory-based calculation, the result of the relative intensity of I/I0 in the P point that was in the geometric shadow bank was 0.25 whereas the result that were received from the analysis of the data was 0.012298. The deviation was 0.238. When the micro wave recipient was placed in the position l of 6 cm, there was evidently some deviation between the theory-based calculation and data-based calculation. The theory-based caculation yielded 0.494554 whereas the data-based calculation arrived at 0.047892. The deviation was 0.4467

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The consideration of mastering English nowadays brings advanced concept in order to reach better education and career in globalization era and the mindset changes of English language education, particularly in nursing as a familiar job within public health. Related to that phenomenon, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teacher should also notice that in teaching ESP they have to play their roles to help students in the teaching and learning process. Considering the importance of the teacher’s roles in teaching ESP, this study aimed at finding out the teacher’s roles in the teaching and learning process of ESP to nursing program students. Besides, this study also aimed at finding out the students responses towards the roles in the teaching and learning process of ESP to nursing program students. This qualitative case study focuses primarily on understanding in depth the teacher’s roles in the teaching and learning process of ESP to nursing program students. The data to cope with ‘the roles played by the teacher in the teaching of ESP’ were both verbal and nonverbal performance when the teachers were playing their roles in classroom while the data to deal with ‘the students’ response towards the teacher’s roles’ were the students’ opinion and attitude towards the teachers’ performance in the classroom. For both research questions, the data collection and analysis procedures were done using classroom observations (using audio visual recording, observation sheet, and fields note), questionnaire and interview (for both the teacher and students). This study found that the kinds of roles played by the research subjects were as the lecturer, clinical or practical teacher, role model, facilitator, mentor, assessor, curriculum assessor, resource developer, and study guide producer. This study also found that the students’ responses towards the teacher’s roles were that they liked when the teacher could do their roles well in the class. The students could also be able to understand their response towards the teacher’s roles that would have impact to their learning process, thus they became active and enthusiastic. While each of the nine of the eleven roles played has been described separately, in reality they are often interconnected and closely related one to another. The teacher’s roles in the teaching and learning process of ESP to nursing program students could be used by teachers as

Abstract

This brief study is to see the relationship of peer interaction within class as well as the lecturer in-class attitude affected the students’ motivation and perception in a university education course where English is taught as a foreign language. The lecturers, each functioned as the language class instructor, managed a 100-minute-session in a class consisted of about twenty students ranged from 18 to 21 years old. The setting was the University of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya in which a sort of matriculation program called Intensive Course becomes a compulsory subject for the freshmen. The hypothesis established confirmed that in-class lecturer’s attitude and the peer-interaction affect students’ motivation in learning, compared to the material content being exposed. A set of questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection and distributed to the sample of class participants of Intensive Course program. It was hoped that the result would contribute beneficial findings that confirm whether interactions happened fostered the learning motivation of the class participants and how it affected them. Result showed that the hypothesis was verified to some extent as the students under study stated that the quality of their peer interaction was one of the grounds that contributed security feeling they need to have in order to freely participate in the learning process without having had to fear of making mistakes. The other ground which is also crucial is the trait of the lecturers that motivate them to persistently continue learning English, found to be challenging to most. Such trait is characterized as being understanding and friendly toward students. It is then hoped that the teachers of English as a Foreign language would realize the importance of having necessary teaching personality that accentuate their classes

Abstract

This study focuses on the English adversative conjunctions empl0yed by Indonesian scholars in their academic essays. The data sources for this study were twenty introduction part of the academic writing written by Indonesian EFL teachers published I TEFLIN journals in 2002 – 2011. The instrument of this study was the writer herself. The data were analyzed based on the categorization of adversative conjunction by Murcia and Freeman (1999). The study reveals that there were variety of adversative conjuncts used in the academic essays,: (1) proper, (2) contrastive, (3) correction, (4) dismissal but not all the adversative conjuncts were appropriately used which might not be realized by many writers. 85% of the writers misused the adversative conjuncts in their papers. The might be two possible causes of errors: (1) false-concept of hypothesis and (2) the interference of the L1.
